UK Ancestry visa
Ancestry UK visa is a type of visa that allows people from certain countries to come to the United Kingdom for up to five years if they can prove that they have a grandparent who was born in the UK.
To be eligible for a UK Ancestry visa, you must:
- be from a country that is not in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland;
- prove that you have a grandparent who was born in the UK; and
- meet all other eligibility requirements.
The UK Ancestry visa is available to people of all ages. Once you have been granted a UK Ancestry visa, you can stay in the UK for up to five years. You can also apply for an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) once you have been in the UK for five years.
If you are granted a UK Ancestry visa, you can:
- study in the UK;
- work in the UK; and
- travel in and out of the UK as you please.

UK Ancestry Visa Guidance
If you are a citizen of a country outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland and you would like to come to the UK to live with your British grandparents, you may be able to apply for a UK Ancestry visa. To apply for a UK Ancestry visa, you will need to gather the following documents.
A valid passport with at least six months of validity. Birth certificate or other evidence showing there is a familial link between you and your UK relation. This must have been issued by an authority in the country where the document was issued, or it must have been registered with a similar authority in another country. It must be either an original document or a certified copy of that document that has been issued by an authority in the country where it was issued, or it should be registered with a similar authority in another country. A letter from your UK relation which includes their name, address, and date of birth. This letter will need to be on headed paper and include their signature if possible.
UK Ancestry visa Document Requirements
Individuals who are not British citizens or their family members may be eligible for Ancestry Visas to live in the UK. The UK Ancestry Visa is available to people who are not British citizens, or their family members, and who can prove that they can trace their ancestors back to the United Kingdom. To be eligible for the Ancestry Visa, applicants must provide certain documents for the UK Ancestry visa as evidence of their ancestry.
The applicant must produce all these documents when they submit an application for this visa:
- Birth certificate,
- Marriage certificate,
- Certificate of divorce or death if applicable,
- Copies of all qualifying children's birth certificates,
- Proof that you have lived in the UK continuously for 2 years before your application date (must be in English),
- 2 passport photographs
Eligibility Criteria for Ancestry Visa
- A person of 17 years of age or above;
- Sufficient finances to support and accommodate you and your dependents in the UK without recourse to public funds;
- You are intending to work in the UK
UK Ancestry Visa Financial Requirements
You must also show that you have a grandparent born in one of the following circumstances:
- In the UK, including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man
- Before 31 March 1922 in what is now the Republic of Ireland
- On a British-registered ship or aircraft
You can claim ancestry if either you or the relevant parent:
- Were adopted
- Were born within or outside marriage in the UK
- You can’t claim UK ancestry through step-parents.
Duration of Stay
Before the expiry of your leave to enter on a British ancestry visa, you can extend your leave from within the UK to make it a total of five years within this category.
You are eligible to apply for settlement in the UK on completion of 05 years, subject to fulfillment of continuous residence and some other requirements.
